California Legislative Staff Education Institute
On October 22, 2019, the California Legislative Staff Education Institute hosted a discussion on the topics of the Master Plan for Aging, and aging-in-place considerations.
California Department of Aging Acting Director, Kim McCoy Wade gave a presentation highlighting the work currently being done to establish and convene the two subcommittees identified in the Governor’s executive order – Research and Long-Term Care.
Acting Director McCoy Wade further articulated the need to be thoughtful about how we collectively use the term “aging-in-place.” Most commonly, the term is understood to convey the desirability of older adults remining in their communities and homes, as opposed to entering a long-term care facility. In reality, sometimes it will make sense for an older adult to downsize to a smaller home, or move in with family, or even into a care facility. These actions, and the concept of aging-in-place are not mutually exclusive, and we should be cognizant of the fact that the notion of aging-in-place is subject to one’s interpretation based on their unique circumstances and life experiences. What’s important is that older and aging adults have an available range of housing choices to meet their needs.
